Entrevista a Stormerz «En aquel momento, simplemente no lo procesé». Defqon.1 2022

Desde Chile para todo el Hard, os traemos una entrevista, con el joven Stormerz, que con 26 años ya ha irrumpido en la escena musical con una fuerza bestial.

Tras la entrevista a Phuture Noize hemos tenido el placer desde Beats & Repeat de entrevistar a Stormerz. Que a pesar de su juventud ya es uno de los artistas mas reclamados dentro de la escena de la música Hard. Muchos os preguntareis quien es Stormerz, por ello os dejamos una breve descripción sobre el.

Fabian Quiroga, más conocido como Stormerz, es un Dj y productor de Hardstyle de Chile que ha irrumpido con un gran reconocimiento dentro de la escena a su corta edad de 26 años. Ha lanzado sus canciones con varios sellos importantes, incluidos Hardwell’s Revealed Recordings, Scantraxx Recordz, Wildstylez’Lose Control Music, actualmente trabaja también con Q-dance Music.

A pesar de vivir a miles de kilómetros de la cuna del Hardstyle en Europa, ha demostrado que no acepta excusas y trabaja duro para alcanzar sus objetivos. En 2019 consiguió pinchar el festival de hard más grande del mundo, Defqon.1, además de alcanzar números importantes en Spotify, con temas como Loving You (+3,2 millones de reproducciones), No Reality (+760k reproducciones), Summer Is Magic (+630k reproducciones), We Are The Universe (+550k reproducciones), etc.

Y ahora es el turno del propio Stormerz, para autodefinirse, y contarnos mas curiosidades sobre su carrera, su música, futuros proyectos y mucho mas…

Quien es Stormerz y sus inicios.

Beats&Repeat (B&R): ¿Quién es Stormerz? ¿Cuáles son tus orígenes?

Stormerz (STZ): En primer lugar, ¡Gracias por recibirme!

Mi nombre es Fabian, de Chile, y comencé a producir como “Stormerz” allá por 2015. Empecé como el típico productor de dormitorio. Nunca estuvo en mi plan convertirme en DJ o algo así, era más como un sueño imposible, algo que admiraba.

Mis orígenes musicales definitivamente provienen de la música electrónica en general: solía escuchar mucha música House, Trance, etc. Así que cuando descubrí que en realidad podías obtener un «DAW» y hacer tus propias cosas, se convirtió en algo así como un videojuego para mí, jaja. Y luego pasé prácticamente todo mi tiempo libre en eso, aprendiendo, experimentando, conectándome con otros productores en línea (por supuesto, viniendo de Chile no tenía muchas conexiones en la vida real con personas de ideas afines) y simplemente me divertía.

Más tarde, descubrí el espectro de la música Hard Dance y decidí probarlo, ya que el lado de la producción era bastante interesante… hasta que, como consecuencia, me convertí en un artista real.

B&R: Who is Stormerz? What are your origins?

STZ: First of all, thanks for having me!
My name is Fabian, from Chile, and I started producing as “Stormerz” back in 2015. I began as the typical bedroom producer. It was never in my plan to become a DJ or whatsoever – it was more like an impossible dream, something I looked up to.

My musical origins definitely come from electronic music in general: I used to listen to a lot of House music, Trance, etc. So when I found out you could actually get a so- called “DAW” and make your own stuff, it became sort of like a videogame at the time for me, haha. And then I pretty much spent all my free time on that, learning, experimenting, connecting with other producers online (of course, coming from Chile I didn’t have much real-life connections with likeminded people) and just having fun.

Later on, I kind of discovered the Hard Dance spectrum of music and decided to give it a try, as the production side of it was quite interesting… until becoming an actual artist just kinda happened as a consequence.

B&R: Hablando de tus inicios, ¿Cuándo supiste realmente que tu futuro estaba en la música? ¿Y por qué decidiste Stormerz como tu nombre artístico?

STZ: Para ser honesto, no tengo un significado profundo para el alias «Stormerz» que pueda recordar, jaja. Ojalá tuviera uno, pero bueno, esa es la verdadera historia jajaja. Estaba buscando un nombre para subir mi música en línea y ese apareció y se quedó ahí jaja.

Creo que el momento en el que decidí meterme de lleno en esto fue cuando recibí la solicitud de reserva para Defqon.1 en Chile, allá por 2015. En ese momento, por supuesto, ya estaba mostrando mis primeros trabajos en sitios como Soundcloud, Facebook y demás, y la gente en línea comenzó a escuchar mis cosas. Luego, Q-dance decidió hacer la primera edición de Defqon.1 en Chile. Por supuesto, estaba emocionado como fan y quería asistir, ya que solía ver videos del festival en Youtube y esas cosas, jaja.

Más tarde, de repente recibí un correo electrónico de ellos pidiéndome que actuara en el Purple Stage. Por supuesto, dije que sí, y luego comencé a investigar cómo ser DJ, jaja. No tenía idea, ya que solo era productor de dormitorio . Así que la primera vez que toqué un reproductor de CDJ con mis manos fue en el momento en que subí al escenario.

Después de ese concierto, me di cuenta de que ganarse la vida con la música en realidad no era tan imposible como pensaba, así que decidí hacerlo todo, dejé la carrera que estaba estudiando en la universidad en ese momento y me centré por completo en aprender más y desarrollar mi carrera musical aún más.

B&R:  Talking about your beginnings, when did you truly know that your future was in music? And why did you decide Stormerz as your artistic name?

STZ: To be honest, I have no deep meaning for the “Stormerz” alias that I can recall, haha. I wish I had one, but hey, that’s the real story lol. I was just looking for a name to upload my music online and that one kinda popped up and just stayed with it haha.

I believe the moment where I decided to fully get into this, was when I got the booking request for Defqon.1 in Chile, back in 2015. By the time, I was of course already showcasing my first works on sites like Soundcloud, Facebook and such, and people online started listening to my stuff. Then, Q-dance decided to make the very first edition of Defqon.1 in Chile – I was of course excited as a fan and was looking to attend, as I used to watch videos of the festival on Youtube and stuff haha.

Later on, I suddenly got an email from them asking me to play at the Purple Stage. I of course said yes, and then began researching on how to actually DJ, haha. I had no idea, since I was only a bedroom producer. So the first time I touched a CDJ player with my hands, was the moment I got on stage.

After that gig, it came as a realization that making a living out music was actually not that impossible as I thought, so I decided to go all in, left the career I was studying at university at the time, and fully focused on learning more and developing my career further.

B&R: ¿Es difícil mejorar y lograr crecer como artista de Hardstyle en Chile? ¿Cómo fue el camino de Stormerz para ser uno de los mejores artistas?

STZ: Por supuesto, fue difícil. Si lo comparas con Europa, por supuesto, Chile no tenía una gran escena o industria con respecto a la música electrónica, por lo que era difícil hacer contactos con la gente, colaborar y ese tipo de cosas. Así que básicamente tuve que construir todo online, hasta que llegó el momento de «salir de mi casa». Sin embargo, sí creo que hoy en día, con el poder de Internet, la geografía ya no es un problema. Puedes hacerlo básicamente en cualquier industria, desde tu casa. Hay demasiadas herramientas para exhibirse en línea y llamar la atención.

B&R: Is It difficult to improve and achieve as a Hardstyle artist growing on Chile? How was your way to be one of the top artists?

STZ: Of course, it was difficult. If you compare it to Europe of course, Chile didn’t have that big of a scene or industry regarding Electronic Music, so that made it difficult to make real life connections with people, collaborate, and that kind of things. So I basically had to build everything online, until it was the time to “come out of my house”. However, I do believe that nowadays, with the power of internet, geography isn’t really a problem anymore. You can make it in basically any industry,from your house. There are too many tools to showcase yourself online and get noticed.

Hablemos sobre Defqon.1 y festivales…

B&R: Defqon1 2022, Stormerz abrió el Red Stage el sábado rodeado de mucha gente chilena ¿Cómo te sentiste? ¿Qué pensaste en ese momento?

STZ: En aquel momento, simplemente no lo procesé. Traté de vivir en el momento tanto como fue posible y disfrutarlo tanto como pude. Solo ahora, que miro hacia atrás en ese momento, me doy cuenta de lo increíble que fue y estoy increíblemente agradecido de haberlo experimentado.

Qué puedo decir, el Red Stage es un lugar legendario para cualquier artista de Hardstyle, y puedo sentirme honrado de haber sido elegido para abrirlo en 2022. Lo que lo hizo más especial: Ver a tanta gente de mi país dándolo todo, apoyándome en el otro lado del mundo. Surrealista. ¡Esperemos que la historia se repita!

B&R: Defqon1 2022, you opened the red stage on Saturday surrounded by a lot of Chileans people, how did you feel it? What did you think in that moment?

STZ: At the moment, I just didn’t process it. I tried to be in the moment as much as possible and enjoy it as much as I could. Only now, that I look back at that moment, I realize how amazing that was and I’m incredibly grateful to have experienced it.

What can I say, the RED stage is a legendary place for any hard dance artist, and I can just feel honored to have been chosen to open it up in 2022. What made it extra special: Seeing so many dedicated people from my country, supporting me on the other side of the world. Surreal. Let’s hope history repeats!

B&R: Tu set en Defqon.1 este año en el UV stage el sábado estuvo lleno de energía, ¿Tienes algún momento especial en mente?

STZ: ¡Gracias! Disfruté mucho la edición de este año. Traté de hacer algo muy variado en mi set, ¡Y creo que funcionó bien! Toqué muchos géneros diferentes, como Drum and Bass, algo de Techno-ish, UK hardcore, etc. Momento especial… cuando PRISKA, una amiga y gran cantante, subió al escenario para cantar una canción en la que trabajamos el año pasado. Espero lanzarlo pronto.

B&R: Your set at Defqon.1 this year at UV stage on Saturday was full of energy, have you got any special moment on your mind?

STZ: Thanks! I really enjoyed this year’s edition. I tried to do something very diverse in my set, and I think it worked out nice! I played many different genres such as Drum and Bass, some Techno-ish stuff, UK hardcore and so on. Special moment… when PRISKA, a very talented friend and singer, stepped up on stage to sing a track we worked on last year! Hope to be releasing that one soon.

B&R: ¿Defqon1 debería volver a Chile? ¿Qué opinas de esta idea? ¿Crees que es posible?

STZ: Defqon.1 en Chile siempre tendrá el lugar más especial en mi corazón, ya que es el lugar donde actué por primera vez y comencé mi carrera musical, por lo que es como un hogar para mí. Por supuesto, todo depende de la organización y si es factible o no. Pero sin duda sería increíble verlo regresar al país. ¡Las ediciones de 2015 y 2016 fueron suuuuper geniales!

B&R:  Defqon1 should return to Chile? What do think about this idea? Do you think that is possible?

STZ: Defqon.1 in Chile will always have the most special place in my heart, as it’s the place where I did my first ever gig and began my musical path, so it’s like a home to me. Of course, it’s all up to the organization and whether it’s doable or not. But it would certainly be amazing to see it come back to the country. The 2015 and 2016 editions were suuuuper cool!

B&R: ¿Cuál es tu festival favorito para actuar? ¿Alguno que quieras pinchar, pero que no lo hayas hecho todavía?

STZ: Tengo que decir Defqon.1 jaja, simplemente es mágico y siempre es especial volver. Siempre es un momento increíble y también genial para compartirlo con amigos de todo el mundo. Y, un festival en el que aún no he actuado pero que me encantaría… Tomorrowland, seguro.

B&R:  Which is your favorite festival to play? Anyone that you didn’t play yet, but you want it?

STZ: I have to say Defqon.1 haha, it’s just magical and always special to come back to that one. It’s always an amazing time and also great to share it with friends from all over the world. And, a festival that I haven’t played yet but I would love to…Tomorrowland, for sure.

Hablando de música y del futuro de Stormerz…

B&R: Hablando de música, ¿estás trabajando en un álbum o piensas en la idea de hacer uno?

STZ: En este momento, no estoy trabajando en un álbum, pero he estado pensando en la idea. La cuestión es que, si hago un álbum, no quiero que sea solo un paquete de pistas juntas, sino algo que realmente cuente una historia o algo así. Podría ser una buena idea para el futuro cercano!

B&R:  Talking about music, are you working on an album or do think in the idea of making one?

STZ: Right now, I’m not working on an album, but I’ve been thinking about the idea. The thing is, if I make an album, I don’t want it to be just a package of tracks put together, but something that actually tells a story or so. Could be a nice idea for the near future!

B&R:  Wild & Free – Envine & Stormerz (una de nuestras canciones favoritas) se lanzó en 2021, ¿Estás pensando en colaborar con Envine en el futuro?

STZ: ¡Muchas gracias! Esa es una canción que también me encanta. Tuvimos una química genial y rápida en el estudio mientras lo hacíamos. Por supuesto que estoy abierto a colaborar nuevamente, y seguro que eventualmente sucederá. ¡También tengo algunas colaboraciones emocionantes con diferentes artistas próximamente!

B&R: Wild & Free (one of our favorites songs) was release in 2021, are you thinking to collaborate with Envine in the future?

STZ: Thanks a lot! That’s one track that I really love, too. We had a really cool and quick chemistry in the studio while making it. Of course I’m open to collaborate again, and for sure will happen eventually. I also have some exciting collaborations with different artists coming up soon!

B&R:  Eres uno de los mejores productores de Hardstyle, ¿tienes algún instrumento musical o VST favorito?

STZ: Para ser honesto, cambia constantemente, ¡hay demasiado y no podría elegir un favorito! A veces me quedo atrapado en los instrumentos de Arturia durante semanas, a veces mucho Serum, y así sucesivamente. También uso muchas cosas de Sinevibes (¡dope plugins!), Dune, Omnisphere, etc.

B&R: You are one of the best Hardstyle producers, do you have any favorite musical instrument or VST?

STZ: To be honest, it changes constantly, there’s too much and couldn’t go with just one favorite! Sometimes I get stuck into the Arturia instruments for weeks, sometimes a lot of Serum, and so on. I use a lot of stuff from Sinevibes too (dope plugins!), Dune, Omnisphere, etc.

B&R: ¿Alguna colaboración futura que nos puedas contar?

STZ: Bueno, en Defqon.1 este año, estrené una colaboración con los chicos de Crystal Lake. Estoy muy feliz de colaborar con ellos, ya que realmente amo su trabajo y los admiraba. Es una canción UK-Hardcore divertida y emotiva, y nos encanta. ¡También tenemos algo más en proceso! En cuanto a otras colaboraciones, prefiero no revelar mucho hasta que las pistas estén realmente terminadas y listas para su lanzamiento, pero lo que puedo decir es que ¡Hay mucho por venir!

B&R: Any future collab you could tell us?

STZ: Well, at this year’s Defqon.1, I premiered a collab with the guys from Crystal Lake. I’m very happy to be collaborating with them as I really love their work, and looked up to them. It’s a fun and emotional UK hardcore song, and we love it. We also have something else in the works! As for other collabs, I prefer to not give out much until the tracks are actually done and set for release, but what I can tell is, there’s a lot coming!

Curiosidades sobre Stormerz…

B&R:  Si mezclaras otro tipo de música, ¿Cuál sería?

STZ: House/Pop, fácil. Me encanta el lado más comercial/radio de la música, y eso es mucho de lo que vengo. Me encantaba Avicii, Alesso, Deadmau5, David Guetta y más cuando comencé a entrar en la música electrónica, y si hubiera tomado una dirección diferente, seguramente sería algo relacionado con ese tipo de sonido.

*Stormerz demuestra que le gusta mucha mas electrónica a parte del Hard.

B&R: If you mixed another kind of music, which would be It?

STZ: House/Pop, easy one. I love the more commercial/radio side of music, and that’s a lot where I come from. I used to love Avicii, Alesso, Deadmau5, David Guetta and more when I was first getting into electronic music, and if I went a different direction, it would be for sure something around that kind of sound.

B&R: ¿Cuál es tu discoteca/fiesta favorita?

STZ: Hm, pregunta difícil! No creo que tenga un club favorito. Cada uno tiene su vibra especial. ¡Tengo que decir que me encanta actuar en países latinoamericanos! El público suele ser muy enérgico, saltando durante todo el set. ¡La energía es asombrosa!

B&R: Which is your favorite club / Party?

STZ: Hm, difficult question! I don’t think I have a favorite club. Each one has its own special vibe. I gotta say tho, I love playing in latin american countries! The crowd is usually so energetic, jumping around through the whole set. Energy is amazing!

Cómo ve el panorama Stormerz

B&R: Finalmente, ¿Cómo ves el panorama actual? El público del Hardstyle es uno de los más fieles que existen, pero ¿Has notado el boom que ha dado el género en los últimos años?

STZ: El panorama está cambiando mucho últimamente. ¡Y creo que eso es bueno! Así funciona la música, de lo contrario estaríamos atrapados en un sonido para siempre, y eso sería aburrido. Necesitamos encontrar enfoques frescos y nuevos. Personalmente, me encantaría que no se tratara tanto de Kicks and Party Vibes solamente, sino que también nos enfocáramos más en el lado musical/creativo. Creo que también podemos hacer cosas energéticas, sin tener que distorsionar todo.

B&R: Finally, how do you see the current scene? The hard public is one of the most loyal that exists, but have you noticed the boom that the genre has given in recent years?

STZ: The scene is changing a lot lately. And I think that’s good! It’s the way that music goes, otherwise we would be stuck in a sound forever, and that would be boring. We need to find fresh and new approaches. Personally, I would love if it wasn’t that much about the kicks and party vibes only, and we focused more in the musical / creative side as well. I think we can also make energetic stuff, without having to make everything all distorted.
